He did his internship at Coast General Hospital in Mombasa, and later went on to become a Medical Officer at Lamu District Hospital. He returned to the same university for his post-graduate studies in internal medicine from 1991 -1995, where he had also joined the department of clinical pharmacology, up until 1994. For the next three years after, he worked with Prof. M.S. Abdullah; the first Nephrologist in Kenya.

Dr. Twahir developed a keen interest in nephrology and felt that he could make a change for the people suffering from kidney diseases, and went on to pursue further training in nephrology through an ISN fellowship program at Guys Hospital in London – now part of the Kings College Hospital.
In 2000, he returned to Kenya and set up a kidney centre offering haemodialysis care. At this time he was also a Medical Advisor to Hoffman La Roche – a pharmaceutical company, which he later left, in order to focus more on the dialysis centre.

Currently, he is the Clinical Director at Parklands Kidney Centre, and a consultant Nephrologist at the Aga Khan University Hospital, where he also heads the transplant program. He was recently elected as Chairman of the Kenya Renal Association, after serving a long stint as the secretary general. His research interests include: improving outcomes for patients on haemodialysis, methods to optimise management of the transplant patient in resource poor settings and, slowing down progression of chronic kidney disease. He has also written several articles in key journals and presented at both local and major international meetings.

He is ISN fellow in Nephrology from the university of Stellenborsch and Tygerberg teaching hospital in Capetown ,south Africa.Through an academic collaboration with hospital clinic de Barcelona, Dr Ngigi has undertaken short preceptor courses in kidney transplantation in both Spain and Egypt.

He completed both his under-graduate and post – graduate training at the University of Nairobi. He did his nephrology training at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa. His interests include glomerulo-nephritides, transplantation and global nephrology.

He participates in clinical teaching of under-graduate, post-graduate and nephrology-fellowship students at the medical school of the University of Nairobi. He has been actively involved in the organization of recent scientific conferences of the Kenya Renal Association as the chair of the scientific committee.

He is a founding fellow of the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Physicians (ECSACoP) and a fellow of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN). Biography Summary

Cheptinga K Philip completed his medical school and residency at Moi University School of Medicine. He completed his fellowship in pediatric nephrology at University of Witwatersrand Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital and from there he moved on to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Kenya where he is medical director of the pediatric dialysis unit.

  • Cheptinga has been recognized for his outstanding clinical work, teaching and research. He has won the faculty-teaching award at both Moi University and Shoe 4Africa Children’s Hospital.
  • Cheptinga’s primary research interests are in sodium and water metabolism in children. Dr. Cheptinga is an an expert on the epidemiology, evaluation and treatment of dysnatremias in children and Adults. He has published and lectured extensively on this topic including publications in the New England Journal of Medicine and invited lectures at the Pediatric Academic Society annual meeting. He has done seminal work in this field, pointing out the dangers of using hypotonic fluids in hospitalized children as it has resulted in numerous cases of iatrogenic death or permanent neurological injury. Dr.Cheptinga serves on the editorial board of numerous journals. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Frontiers in Pediatrics and on the editorial board of Pediatric Nephrology.

Dr Moturi has participated in several studies including ISN Global Kidney Health Atlas, H3Africa Kidney Disease Research Network studies and 0by25 ISN Global Snapshot study.
He is currently a lecturer at Kenyatta University Medical School. He has a keen interest in acute kidney injury and he is pursuing a Phd in the role thrombosis in the outcomes of kidney diseases in pregnancy.
Dr Moturi is a co-founder of Comprehensive Kidney Services and a current Treasurer of Kenya Renal Association.
